After works by Rosemarie Trockel, Lawrence Weiner and Kai Althoff it is a pleasure to be able to announce Isa Genzken as the creator of the 2016 members gift. This year we once again wish to use an edition to thank our members for their loyal support and simultaneously to enable them to occupy themselves with art in an even more intense manner.
The body of work that Isa Genzken has been creating since the 1970s is distinguished by its exceptionally diverse manifestations, and the artist has repeatedly used it to expand the spectrum of possibilities available to the art forms of sculpture, installation and collage. Through the innovative potential of her work she quickly gained extensive recognition; today she can thus be seen as an established fixture in international developments in art. In this connection Genzken represented Germany at the 2007 Venice Biennale and was honoured with a retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 2014. This year she has additionally had very prominent retrospectives at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum and Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau.
The work designed by Isa Genzken exclusively for the members of the Kölnischer Kunstverein is a portrait-format digital print showing an anthropomorphic sculpture of 2006 next to the artist’s name printed in black lettering. The image is directly related to the cover of a catalogue published for her exhibitions at Salzburg’s Galerie im Taxispalais and the Vienna Secession. Genzken underscores the importance of the depicted sculpture through the reproduction of this image, but she also alludes to the theme of the self-portrait, which appears repeatedly in her oeuvre.

At this point we wish to express our great gratitude to the artist, in particular. Through her work she has reinforced the importance of the members gift for the Kölnischer Kunstverein. We are also deeply indebted to Ms Gerburg Imhoff and Ms Jutta Rohde as well as the Imhoff Stiftung for accompanying the realisation of this project with remarkable passion. Members of the Kunstverein can collect their 2016 members gift from 28 October 2016 until 31 August 2017 during the exhibitions’ opening hours (Tuesday to Sunday, 11am–6pm). Please note that it will not be possible to collect your work during the periods between exhibitions!
